According to the data from the Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Research LED Research (GGII), in 2017, the global LED lighting market output value reached 536 billion RMB, of which, China’s LED lighting output value reached 296.9 billion RMB, a year-on-year increase of nearly 21%, and the global ratio reached 55.40%, of which LED lighting exports exceeded US$20 billion, a year-on-year increase of more than 37%. Considering that global LED lighting penetration still has room to double, GGII expects China LED lighting market size to remain at around 15% in the next few years. Market growth, China’s LED lighting market will reach 461.4 billion RMB by 2020.

However, due to its integrated design, evaluating the photometric performance of LEDs and other solid state lighting products can be extremely challenging. In order to accelerate the acceptance of high-performance lighting products by the market, DOE (Department of Energy, US Department of Energy) and the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance (NGLIA) jointly initiated the LED Lighting Facts program. From its initial focus on photometric performance of LED lighting products, the program gradually developed into a rich product database that includes user-centric product analysis tools to help partners evaluate lighting product performance and emerging innovative designs.

As of now, the LED Lighting Facts program has approved 130 testing laboratories and accumulatively issued 72,486 labels for 1,705 manufacturers. The LED Lighting Facts label satisfies people’s requirements for providing more specific performance data and more credibility for lighting products, and plays a key role in the application and development of solid-state lighting technology.

Unfortunately, due to funding uncertainty caused by the reduction of the federal budget, the US Department of Energy decided to stop supporting the plan. Therefore, LED Lighting Facts plans to no longer accept product submissions from March 1st, and the site will be closed on March 30th. Until the site is eventually closed, partners can still log in and download the tag and product list.

LED street lamp replacement is the global trend

Recently, Chicago officials in the United States confirmed that they plan to replace 85% of street lights with LED lights in the next four years, making Chicago one of the largest cities in the world to convert street lighting to LED.

The plan replaces 270,000 high pressure sodium lamps with more energy efficient and longer lasting LED lamps.

The plan starts from last year, is estimated to cost 160 million US dollars (about 1 billion RMB). However, it will also generate energy costs for the Chicago City Council.

LED manufacturers said that LED technology can reduce energy consumption 60% to 80%, in two years or less to achieve return on investment.

The plan also includes a smart grid, which can be instructed when the lights are not working, so residents can no longer report problems.

Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, said: “This project is a win-win not only for one of the largest lighting modernization programs in the United States, but also for residents to dial 311 less.” (Note: 311 is the hotline at the Civic Center).

He also said: “Under this proposed project, we will provide modern, reliable and high quality lighting that will improve the quality of life in every community in Chicago.”
