I found it helpful to stretch the clamps out a little so that there was about 1/2 inch distance from the plane of the lip of the pot and the end of the clamps when they are full extended.PR. 2012

They come very tight/close to the outer edge of the pot so that when they are pushed out they extend to the same plane as the lip.

DIFFICULT TO CLAMP IN PLACEJULY 10. Oh don’t forget to buy the wire protection brackets (sorry can’t remember the proper name) to protect the wires for when you pop the metal tabs out: Recessed LED Remodel Insulation Contact Air-Tite Housing

6 in. you just fold the legs together and attach to each side of the same clip. The clamps can be a little difficult to secure if a drywall ceiling is a little thicker than what the unit was designed for.
