2022 MicroMini LED applications will account for 11% of total LED epitaxial wafer usage
With the advent of Micro LED and Mini LED, LED has gradually changed from the past backlight to the self-illuminating role on the consumer electronics display. Each LED will become a pixel, which will greatly increase the number of LED epitaxial wafers used. After related products are commercialized, it is estimated that by 2022, Micro LED & Mini LED applications will account for 11% of the total number of LED epitaxial wafers, which will become an important application for supporting demand.
LEDinside researcher Chu Chaochao pointed out that in 2017, the global use of LED epitaxial wafers will be about 37 million, an increase of 30% year-on-year. Although the rise of OLED will affect the number of LED backlights for mobile phones and large-sized panels, the number of epitaxial wafers used in general lighting and automotive lighting applications continues to grow, coupled with the rapid growth of small-pitch display applications, and the use of LED epitaxial wafers. The number has increased significantly.
However, in the case of significant expansion of China's LED manufacturers, the overall industrial capacity growth rate in the future may be much faster than the demand growth rate, so the future can only rely on new applications to boost demand, especially the technical progress of Micro LED and Mini LED play an important role.
In terms of the output value of the LED market, although the impact of the substantial expansion of Chinese manufacturers, the future decline in the price of LED may increase, but in the general lighting and automotive lighting applications, LED penetration continues to increase, plus New applications of the Micro LED and Mini LED have emerged. It is estimated that global LED output will grow from 17.16 billion U.S. dollars in 2017 to 25.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, and CAGR will reach 7% between 2017 and 2022.

Due to its high resolution, high brightness, power saving, and fast response, Micro LED is considered as a new generation of display technology, attracting global manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony, Facebook, and Google. Chinese manufacturers include Sanan Optoelectronics, Huacan Optoelectronics, Qianzhao Optoelectronics, Liad, and Siu Chi shares.
In the development of Micro LED, the Taiwan area in China is also very active. ITRI ??is setting up a Micro LED trial production line, and the fastest product will be available to VR manufacturers in the third quarter of 2018. Other major companies such as Jingdian, AUO, Innolux, Yuchuang, Accumulation and other large companies are also actively involved in the development of related technologies.
As Micro LED still faces certain technical bottlenecks, Mini LED considered as a transitional product is also favored by manufacturers. The chip factories include Jingdian, Lunda, Sanan, Huacan, etc.; the packaging plant has billion light, Rongchuang, Hong Qi, Seoul Semiconductor, etc.; IC design factory has Accumulation, Rui Ding, and Lotus Optoelectronics, etc.; Panel Factory has AUO, Innolux; display manufacturers include Liad and so on.
