According to data released by the Korea Intellectual Property Office (equivalent to the Intellectual Property Office) on the 7th, South Korea ranks first in the world in the field of Micro LED displays, leading the technology research and development of related industries.

The results of the analysis of patent applications by the world's five major intellectual property offices (IP5) in South Korea, the United States, China, Japan, and the European Union show that the number of patents involving Micro LED displays has almost doubled in the past decade, from 540 in 2013 to 1,045 in 2022.

In terms of the nationality of the patent right holder, South Korea ranks first with 1,567 patents, accounting for 23.2%. It is followed by Japan (1,360, 20.1%), mainland China (1,217, 18%), the United States (1,080, 16%) and the European Union (750, 11%). The main patent holders include LG Innotek (404, 6%), Samsung Electronics (384, 5.7%), Japan Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (315, 4.7%), Samsung Display (240, 3.6%), BOE (223, 3.3%), etc.

During the same period, the average annual growth rate of related patent ownership was from high to low in China (37.5%), the European Union (10%), Taiwan (9.9%), South Korea (4.4%), and the United States (4.1%).

The Intellectual Property Office predicts that the technical competition between South Korea and China over micro-LED displays will become increasingly fierce.
