ENELTEC creates a healthy light environment

Today's LED lighting system can combine the Internet of Things communication technology and intelligent control, use the function of adjusting the color temperature and wavelength of the light, and provide a human-caused lighting environment that meets the psychological needs for different application fields, ethnic groups, and time points. For people who spend 90% of their time indoors, the flexible application of LED lighting can better meet the needs of different situations, such as improving the human body's biological clock, improving the quality of work and sleep, and meeting people's safety at the psychological level to provide human-caused lighting.

"Providing the right light at the right time has a positive effect on people's health, so that people can really get enough rest when they need to rest, and have enough energy when they need to focus on work." Industrial Technology Research Institute Electronics and Jiang Yahui, deputy project manager of the Institute of Optoelectronic Systems, shared the impact of human lighting on health.

Light not only provides visual color and perception of brightness and darkness, but also provides people's non-image forming (NIF) visual system, which is responsible for regulating the physiological day and night cycle, affecting the secretion of the pineal gland during the day and the secretion of melatonin at night. Since ancient times, human beings work at sunrise and rest at sunset. Their circadian rhythms are adjusted by sunlight. High-intensity stimulation is required during the day. At night, avoid high-intensity, high color temperature or high physiological stimulus light environment to prevent the body from fading due to light. With the increasing demand for artificial lighting at night, improper lighting at night also affects human physical health. According to reference data, artificial light at night is popular in cities, and people have a high proportion of civilization diseases, such as circadian rhythm disorders, sleep disorders, and even women suffering from breast cancer.

Jiang Yahui explained that the influence factors of light on the circadian rhythm include light intensity, wavelength and time of exposure. At present, common LED artificial light can control the light intensity and color temperature. Although this LED artificial lighting can adjust the light parameters according to the circadian rhythm, sometimes it cannot be at the same time. Meet the dual needs of photophysiology and psychology. According to the CIE S 026 standard issued by the International Lighting Standards Committee, the main band of the spectrum that affects the circadian rhythm is 480nm blue light, so how to control the proportion of blue light in the night lighting environment will be an important factor affecting physiological health.

Jiang Yahui suggested that if you want to accurately adjust the artificial light environment in line with the circadian rhythm, you can use the artificial spectrum regulation of "same color temperature and different physiological stimuli" to meet the lighting needs of different light spectrums during the day and night, and reduce the nighttime that interferes with the secretion of melatonin. The lighting environment helps to improve the quality of sleep. Different spectra have different stimuli to people's physiology. The CIE S 026 standard defines the circadian action factor (CAF). The higher the CAF value, the more it inhibits the production of melatonin in the human body and makes people awake; vice versa. A low CAF value will prevent the light source from excessively inhibiting the secretion of melatonin and regulate the circadian rhythm.

Driven by healthy lighting as a new generation of LED application trends, corresponding light environments can be created according to different fields and people's work needs. Take the above-mentioned workers as an example, if they stay in an office dominated by white light for a long time, they can adjust the metamer wavelength of the light to increase or decrease the CAF value to imitate the circadian rhythm of natural light. For example, under high color temperature lighting suitable for work, increase the CAF value in the morning to make the work more efficient, and gradually reduce the CAF value after noon, taking into account the high color temperature lighting of work performance and meeting the needs of the human body's biological clock.

Experts from the Human Factors Lighting Laboratory of the Industrial Technology Research Institute shared that healthy lighting is also suitable for fields that require rotation. For example, nursing staff on duty in the nursing station of a hospital usually leave work at 12 o'clock in the evening and need to rest when they return home. Therefore, the lighting of the nursing station for two hours before leaving get off work should be switched to low-CAF white light to avoid improper artificial lighting. Affect the secretion of melatonin at night. Conversely, during working hours that require mental concentration, white light with a high CAF value is needed to maintain awake work and increase work efficiency.

In the support center, because the eyes of the elderly have a low acceptance of blue light stimulation, it is easy to cause insufficient blue light acceptance during the day and affect the biological clock. In the evening, it is easy to doze off and cannot sleep at night. Therefore, the use of adjustable lighting technology and the use of lamps with high color temperature and high illuminance during the day can improve the circadian rhythm of the elderly and improve the quality of sleep.

Light not only needs to provide visual functions, but also affects health. To create a safe, comfortable and healthy light environment, as the importance of circadian rhythm to people's health has gradually gained attention, the LED industry has also begun to launch corresponding products. Jiang Yahui pointed out that in terms of specifications, health lighting products have to provide lighting with the same brightness and provide light sources with different physiological stimuli, and the cost is relatively high. In addition, on the premise of promoting health, related certifications such as FDA are more important for the industry to invest money and time. It is expected that in the future, driven by relevant regulations, such as the health lighting standard and IWBI's WELL standard, health lighting will be a new wave of trends.
