How to keep LED Street Light avoid being damaged by lightning

  Because of its properties, LED street lights are often destroyed by lightning during thunderstorms. A study found the following ways are some of the most effective methods to prevent LED street lights from being damaged by lightning:

  1. Setting the lightning protection zone

  In addition to the current power supplies, LED street lights will also set up some communication devices to control the lights off and the brightness. All these devices and their power supplies are to be resettled in the lightning protection zones which are directly protected by the Shell Shield. The electromagnetic field is much weaker there.

  2, Lightning equipotential connection

  For the complete elimination of destructive potential difference caused by lightning on LED street lights, the power lines, signal lines, metal pipes, etc. use over-voltage protector for equipotential connection. Every inner protection zone must also be connected at the interface and every interfaces connected locally, then finally connected with the main equipotential place.

  3. Combine the external and internal lightning protection

  Now the exterior part of LED street lights is the conductor material itself, which is equivalent to a lightning rod. The design must be installed with deflectors and ground network which constitute the external lightning protection system. This system can avoid fires and personal security incidents caused by direct lightning strike on LED street lights. The internal lightning protection system refers to the protection of internal LED street lights through the ground and setting the voltage protection. This system prevents the damage of power from lightning overvoltage and other forms of intrusion, which the external lightning protection system can not guarantee. In fact, the two systems are mutually reinforcing and complementary. Many devices in the internal lightning protection systems such as housing, access to protected areas and cable, metal pipes, etc. must be connected to the external lightning protection system or set overvoltage protection, and finally equipotential connection.

  4. High-quality protective equipment - Lightning protection module and overvoltage protection module

  The role of the lightning protection device is connecting those protected areas in the shortest possible time (nanoseconds) into equipotential system so that each port of equipment is equal. At the same time it can release the circuit from the enormous lightning pulse energy generated by the short route into the earth and reduce the potential difference between the interfaces, thus protecting the equipment.

  The power supply module of LED street lamp must not only be designed in accordance with the above requirements but also undergo a rigorous inspection procedures:

  1, the control device with a constant voltage output function or with a constant current output capability, or with both, should take GB 19510.12 / IEC61347-2-13 safety standards test.

  2, the logic control device can only control the LED light and dark, flashing, color changing function should take GB 19510.12 / IEC61347-2-11 safety standards test.

  3, if a control device has both of the above two functions, it shall take GB 19510.12 / IEC 61347-2-13 safety standard test.

  Practice has proved that with scientific design and rigorous testing, it can not only ensure that the LED street lighting system will not subject to lightning damage, but also eliminate the common mode and differential mode interference of lightning on the power supply.
