July 9, in Auckland road lighting conference, the Minister announced a New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) policy change, this change will allow local authorities to obtain funds more quickly to upgrade street lighting to LED lighting.

Over the next three years, the New Zealand Transport Agency and local governments will be able to spend about $ 66 million to upgrade the existing road lighting to LED street lighting. Current indications are that in the three years from 2018 onwards, and will spend another $ 39 million.

Due to lower energy consumption and lower maintenance costs, LED lighting than the current total cost of lighting by about 20% lower. It is understood that New Zealand's total annual cost of road lighting was $ 50 million. If according to 50% of energy consumption and 70% of maintenance costs to count, facelift LED can save $ 10 million annually.

LED road lighting can restore objects more realistic colors, higher resolution, thereby enhancing city road safety, reduce crime and destruction, reducing light pollution.

It is understood that New Zealand currently has about 370,000 street, just 2% of the use of LED technology, all the rest are high-pressure sodium lamps. Auckland Department of Transportation has commitments to upgrade all lights. Over the next four years, 40,000 street lights will be replaced by LED.
