40 New Solar-Powered Wind-Absorbing Insecticidal Lights Protect Farmland in Shitan Town, Hunan
Recently, 40 solar-powered wind-absorbing insecticidal lights stand neatly in the fields of the core base of the provincial-level 10,000-mu comprehensive demonstration area in Shitan Town, Xiangtan County, Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, acting as “field guards” ready for duty at any time. Professional technicians from the Plant Protection and Quarantine Station of Xiangtan County Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs completed the assembly and commissioning of the equipment in two days, building an ecological protection barrier for the fertile farmland.

The solar-powered wind-absorbing insecticidal lights installed this time are innovative scientific and technological equipment in the field of green prevention and control. Their core working principle ingeniously combines the phototaxis of pests with negative pressure airflow capture technology. Each light is equipped with a built-in UV or LED light source of a specific wavelength, which can accurately emit light to efficiently attract various phototactic pests such as Lepidoptera and Coleoptera at night. When pests approach the light source, the bottom fan quickly starts to generate strong negative pressure airflow, forming an inward airflow field that instantly sucks the pests into the collection device inside the lamp. The pests eventually die from dehydration and air-drying without escape, realizing pure physical trapping and killing without chemical pollution.
“One light can cover about 15 mu of farmland, and 40 lights achieve full coverage and control in key areas of the core demonstration area,” introduced the on-site technical director. The equipment is powered by solar energy without external power supply: it stores energy through photovoltaic panels during the day and automatically turns on at night. This not only reduces prevention and control costs but also completely eliminates dependence on chemical pesticides. Compared with traditional control methods, solar-powered wind-absorbing insecticidal lights can reduce pesticide usage, protect the ecology of soil and water resources, improve the quality of agricultural products, and lay a foundation for subsequent green certification.
Farmers praised the insecticidal lights on the ridges: “We used to patrol the fields with flashlights at midnight. Now with these ‘night owl guards’, we spray less pesticides. It’s both worry-free and eco-friendly, and the crops will definitely be more popular in the market!”
Relevant officials from Xiangtan County Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs stated that the installation of solar-powered wind-absorbing insecticidal lights is a concrete measure to promote green agricultural development and support rural revitalization. Next, the bureau will continue to monitor equipment performance, provide technical guidance and maintenance training, and plan to expand the promotion of green prevention and control technology, enabling more farmland with technology to achieve a win-win situation between ecological and economic benefits.
