Replacement of Chinese-style Lamp Shades Completed on a Section of Yingbin Road, Zhangzhou, Fujian

Recently, a lampshade of the Chinese-style street lamp accidentally fell near the Jinxiuyifang Bus Stop on Yingbin Road, Longwen District, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. After an on-site inspection by the Urban Renewal Center, an institution directly under the Zhangzhou Municipal Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the accident was attributed to the long service life of this batch of Chinese-style lamp shades. Subjected to years of sun and rain, some shades suffered aging and damage, posing falling risks under extreme weather conditions.

Further verification confirmed that the Chinese-style street lamps along the affected road and adjacent areas were installed by the Urban Investment Group in 2016, with a service life exceeding nine years. Most lamp shades show signs of aging and breakage, creating hazards of falling during severe weather. To eliminate potential risks beforehand, full replacement of this batch of shades was deemed necessary. The Urban Renewal Center immediately held a special meeting to coordinate material preparation, construction scheduling and safety management, aiming to complete the replacement efficiently and properly while minimizing disruptions to traffic.

I. Material Preparation for Efficient Replacement

On-site inventory showed that a total of 53 goblet-shaped lamp shades and 424 spherical lamp shades of the same batch needed to be replaced along the road and surrounding sections. After negotiations with the manufacturer, production and delivery of all replacement shades were completed within 10 days.

II. Staggered Construction to Lessen Traffic Disruption

Replacement work on Yingbin Road (from Jiulong Avenue to Longxi South Road) was carried out during regular working hours to balance construction progress and daily traffic flow. Construction on Shengli Road (from Wudang Palace to Jiulong Avenue) was scheduled on weekends to avoid weekday traffic peaks. The whole project covering both roads took only four days, and reasonable staggered working schedules guaranteed on-time completion.

III. Standardized Construction to Reinforce Safety Defenses

Stringent safety and civilized construction protocols were enforced throughout the works. Warning signs and safety barriers were erected around construction zones, and safe passage areas were marked to guide orderly flow of vehicles and pedestrians. Dedicated staff were assigned for on-site safety supervision. Upon completion of daily work, discarded old shades and debris on roadways and median strips were fully cleared to secure public passage.

This replacement project forms part of routine maintenance of urban lighting infrastructure. Moving forward, the Zhangzhou Urban Renewal Center will continue regular inspections and maintenance of city lighting facilities. Hidden defects will be rectified promptly once identified, safeguarding citizens’ safe night travel via standardized and professional management.
