The difficulties for LED urban lighting: Pollution worries

The Xiamen Topstar Lighting Co. Ltd, who is responsible for abandoning the treatment of energy-saving lamps, the annual two total design capacity of processing 3,600 tons of machine, the actual annual handling capacity of less than 100 tons. The Lamp waste trading Co., Ltd. received only 16 tons last year, less than one percent of disposal capacity.

waste energy-saving lamps are spread-ed all over the world, so it is urgent to recycle process. Many companies have energy-saving lamps professional qualification, but its processing machines at most of the time are nothing to dry.

The difficulties for LED urban lighting: Pollution worries

Lack of recycling channels, high processing costs between the consumer end and the handle end of the energy-saving lamps underline a huge gap.

Pollution worries

In 2008, the Ministry of Finance, the National Development and Reform Commission deploy the first batch of 50 million, financial subsidies, promotion of efficient lighting products was officially launched, marking the promotion of efficient lighting products in China.

Enterprises as subsidies, companies will subsidize the funds to transfer to the consumer indirect subsidies in order to support the promotion of efficient urban lighting products. This is the first time using of financial subsidies to support terminal energy-saving products to promote consumers.

According to statistics, energy efficient lighting products save 60% to 80% than ordinary incandescent, and service life is 4-6 times more.

November 1, 2011, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, General Administration of Customs, State Administration for Industry and Commerce, the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine jointly issued the “China phased out incandescent road-map”. And clear effect from October 1, 2012, gradually banned the import and sale of general led projects  lighting incandescent lamp.

The electricity for urban lighting in our country accounts for about 13% as a whole society electricity consumption. If replaced all the 1.4 billion incandescent what we used with all the energy-saving lamps, the annual power saving could be 48 billion, equivalent to a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 48 million tons, great potential for energy saving.

But another worry is followed.

If waste energy-saving lamps are trash at random, broken incinerated the atomic state mercury vapor into the atmosphere, and then settling into the soil or rivers, and the action of microorganisms into organic mercury compounds such as methyl-mercury. Methyl-mercury can dissolve in fat, easy to intestines, lungs, skin absorption, infiltration of blood and accumulate in the kidney, brain and other organs of the body, leading to chronic poisoning.
