American greenhouse uses LED and high-pressure sodium lamp mixed lighting system to save energy by 40%!

Signify, a global leader in lighting, has partnered with AppHarvest to help the latter improve efficiency and increase yields using fewer resources at its 25-hectare greenhouse in Morehead, Kentucky, USA. AppHarvest will grow tomatoes and cucumbers in its greenhouse, which is due to be completed in the second half of 2020.

American greenhouse uses LED and high-pressure sodium lamp mixed lighting system to save energy by 40%!

The greenhouse features a unique hybrid LED and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lighting system using Philips GreenPower LED toplighting and Agrolux High Pressure Sodium lighting to significantly reduce energy consumption while increasing production throughout the year. LED lighting systems are 40% more energy efficient than traditional greenhouse lighting while emitting less radiant heat. In fall and spring, LED lighting will be used to grow more produce. In addition to LEDs, high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights will be used during the colder months, and their heat will help keep the greenhouse warm and reduce natural gas usage.

It is reported that AppHarvest has partnered with Equilibrium, a leading greenhouse investment company. Dalsem Complete Greenhouse Projects will install the LED lights and oversee construction of the greenhouse.

"We are very excited about our partnership with AppHarvest and Equilibrium," said Bill Bien, CEO of Signify Agricultural Lighting. "We share our partners' commitment to sustainable horticulture and we look forward to helping them improve growth predictability." , crop quality and yield, while increasing energy efficiency.”

The compact LED overhead light can provide a high light output of 1,800 ol/s and an efficiency of up to 3.0 ol/J, and help growers effectively optimize crop growth, improve crop quality and reduce operating costs. Compared to a 1,000 W HPS luminaire, the Philips GreenPower LED Compact Ceiling Light produces the same amount of light with a similar light distribution while consuming 40% less power and dissipating significantly less heat. This means that growers can control light and heat more independently, providing plants with unprecedentedly high light levels and more control over growing conditions.
