LED lighting intelligent technology interprets a century-old light and shadow story on the Bund
The Bund World Historical Building Group was formed in the 1930s. It has gathered more than 20 buildings of different periods, countries and styles, which have important historical and artistic value. Since 1989, the Bund has introduced high-power gas discharge lamps to replace incandescent lamps for flood lighting of night scenes. After decades of development, night tours on the Bund have become a must for tourists who come to Shanghai. Each year, about 3 to 5 million tourists take cruise ships to watch the night scenery on both sides of the strait, and more than 30 million tourists choose to enjoy the night scenery on the shore.
In response to the original lighting status of the historical buildings on the Bund and the night travel needs of citizens and tourists, Signify replaced high-power gas discharge lamps with more energy-saving and environmentally friendly Philips LED lamps. Three lighting modes highlight the history of the Bund and protect the true style of the building. The weekday mode is mainly based on classic static lighting, the holiday mode appropriately introduces dynamic lighting, and the late night mode mainly highlights the architectural skyline.
During the renovation process, in order to solve the problems of the original lighting color, the inconsistency of brightness and darkness, the inability to form a coordinated and coherent lighting effect, and affect the aesthetics of the building appearance, Signify worked with a number of design units to develop a targeted lighting renovation for the Bund lighting. The plan uses Color Kinetics/ColorReach floodlights, eW Reach floodlights, Philips UniStrip line lights and Philips UniFlood floodlights as the main lamp types, and the main Bund part uses nearly 10,000 high-performance LED lamps to replace the original lamps. The color scheme uses a dual-color temperature scheme to retain the overall classic color of the Bund. Among them, 23 buildings use adjustable white LED facade lighting to unify the lighting color of the building; the details of the building's cornice, carvings, etc. add lights to embellish it.
In the Bund lighting project, Signify also innovatively introduced colored lights to add a new sense of hierarchy to the Bund. Nearly 300 sets of Color Kinetics ColorGraze MX4 wall washers have been installed on the 1.2-kilometer-long Pujiang waterfront; the Shanghai Bund Meteorological Signal Station and the Shanghai People’s Heroes Memorial Tower in the Bund Huangpu Park adopt Color Kinetics ColorReach floodlight lights up.
At the same time, the project also uses the Interact brand Internet of Things lighting platform and software, which can be perfectly compatible with the existing centralized control platform of the Bund landscape light. The lighting effect of the building facade can be adjusted according to the needs of the use, and the overall style of the building can be better displayed. It can also create dynamic light shows during holidays and major occasions, which can express the lighting characteristics of different eras in the past 100 years, and give the Bund a more modern dynamic light and shadow rhythm, helping the building complex bloom its unique night style charm of blending old and new.
Through the use of smart and interconnected LED lighting, Signify can even help reduce energy consumption and operating costs for historic buildings on the Bund, and help Shanghai and the entire country develop eco-friendly business and tourism landmarks.
