The development process from LED to Mini LED

Since the birth of LED displays, there has been an absolute trend of shrinking pixel pitch, and the record has been constantly refreshed. From dot pitch 2.5mm, to 2mm, 1.5mm, 1.2mm, and continuously descending to smaller pitches, now 1.0 is born. The micro-pitch LED market below mm enters the Mini LED and Micro LED track.

The development process from LED to Mini LED

In terms of corporate layout, international manufacturers have already weakened the layout of large LED display screens. However, with the advent of the Mini/Micro LED era, international manufacturers have readjusted their strategies in recent years, intending to enter the Micro LED large-size display market to get a piece of the pie.

And domestic companies are not lagging behind, increasing the development of Micro LED large-size display products. The launch of the Lehman Micro LED private giant screen theater by Lehman Optoelectronics is a good example.

But for now, there are still major technical bottlenecks in Micro LED, including epitaxy, chips, mass transfer, full color, power drive, backplane, detection and repair technology, etc., which has also led to the development of Micro LED. The overall production cost is still at a relatively high level.

In response to this problem, Lehman Optoelectronics believes that, compared with the traditional packaging forms of SMD and IMD (four-in-one), COB technology integrates midstream packaging and downstream display technology in the LED industry, eliminating the cost of brackets and some manufacturing links. The efficiency is relatively higher, and the smaller the dot pitch, the more obvious the comprehensive cost advantage of COB products. In addition, changes in the cost of COB products are not only affected by the supply price of the upstream main material suppliers, but also affected by various factors such as process and design improvements, scale, and alternative materials. It is expected that the future cost reduction rate may reach 10% - 15% per year.

And Li Yunli, CEO of Techuang, said that the cost of Micro LED will drop by 95% in five years, and there will be a chance to gradually enter the middle and low-end market from the high-end market in 2025.

In general, the trend of Micro LED technology becoming more mature and costs will remain unchanged. We believe that Micro LED will eventually enter more families, explore a wider range of application scenarios, and bring the ultimate audio-visual enjoyment to more consumers.
