First, the contrast between LED lights and CFL display

Table 1 compares the characteristics between CFLs and LED lamps. Two different models of CFL lamps are installed in different locations in the hall. Both fluorescent lamps have a divergence angle above 110°, while Cree LEDs are only 18°. The optical density of the center beam of the LED product is significantly higher than that of the fluorescent lamp. The fluorescent lamp is about 300, and the LED reaches 4465, which allows the LED lamp to concentrate more light in a local area.

The spectrum of the CFL is weaker in the long wavelength red range, which appears to be yellowish green compared to halogen or LED lamps. Cree LEDs provide better illumination quality and, like halogen incandescent lamps, have a high color rendering index. In terms of color rendering index, the display index of both CFLs is 82, and the two Cree LEDs reach 93, because Cree LED lamps have more energy distribution in the long-wavelength red spectrum region.

The three lamps are similar in power and efficacy, so the highlights of Cree LED applications are not energy saving and high brightness. In fact, the full lumen output of Cree LEDs is only a little more than half that of 23W compact fluorescent lamps. It has the advantage of being able to concentrate the beam in a small cone, which is especially suitable for local illumination. Cree LEDs emit less light in large angle areas.

When considering the application of local illumination to compare luminaires, the central beam candela and full spectral distribution of the luminaire are much more important than pure luminous flux or efficacy.

In short, Cree LED lights can increase the contrast between the artwork and the surrounding walls, making the color of the artwork look more vivid. Table 2 gives a brief description of the different lighting conditions caused by different luminaires. On the upper wall of the artwork, the average vertical illumination of the Cree LED is reduced compared to the 23W fluorescent lamp, because it concentrates more light on the surface of the artwork. From the contrast analysis, the CFL is only 0.5, and the contrast of the LED light is 1.9, which greatly enhances the lighting effect of the artwork.

Second, the comparative analysis of the cost of each lamp

LED new lights have higher purchase costs, but these excess costs are theoretically offset by lower power and maintenance costs.

In this luminaire retrofit project, the LED replacement lamps all work on the automatic control circuit, working 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, a total of 52 weeks (3120 hours / year). The effective life of LEDPAR38 is 50,000 hours. According to the above, it is 16 years. The average lifespan of the two fluorescent lamps is 8,000 hours, equivalent to 2 years and 6 months.

In the United States, there is a large gap in commercial electricity prices in different states or in different regions. In April 2011, the average retail price in the United States was about 0.1$/KWh, and the price ranged from the highest in Hawaii at 0.284$/KWh to the lowest in Utah at 0.0695$/KWh. In general, LED products are economically affordable to high-cost areas because they provide enough energy savings to compensate for their high sales prices.

The annual replacement cost for the Bunaville Power Authority CFLR30 is approximately $424.69 and the CFLPar38 is $537.26, which includes labor costs. In the same situation, the new LED light replacement costs about 275.56$ per year. However, LED lights will not be damaged or require maintenance during the 16-year life cycle.

Third, the selection of lighting experience

For local illumination, it is not only necessary to compare the luminous flux and power of the product, but also to measure its light distribution characteristics. In the use of the projection lamp in the hall of the Bonneville Power Headquarters, the fluorescent lamp greatly reduced the power loss compared to the PAR38 halogen lamp, but the light distribution effect failed to meet the standard. The LED light solves this problem very well because it has a small light divergence angle, making the artwork itself much better than the surrounding wall. When considering the selection of lamps, such as the emission angle and the central emission optical density, etc., should be used together with the luminous flux and power as an indicator.

Compared to other high-efficiency light sources (such as CFL), LED replacement lamps may not be a light fixture, but this is not the key to replacement. The rate of return on the economy is only partially dependent on the different power between the incumbent system and the replacement system. Although fluorescent lamps are already energy efficient, LEDs take longer to reflect their economic value. The CFL cannot focus the light on the artwork, indicating that it is not suitable for this application.

Compared to fluorescent lamps, LED lamps can improve color quality and power efficiency. When purchasing the product, check the technical specifications of the LED product (such as CCT, CRI, etc.) to ensure that the product is suitable for the basic requirements of the application. However, the color indicator sometimes wants the information that the human eye sees, and does not effectively convey the color quality after illumination. Therefore, a physical model is needed to analyze and evaluate.

Simple color and beam indicators are not comprehensive, and the actual effect of the fixture after installation is not foreseen. Therefore, before purchasing a large number of replacement lamps, it is very important to look at the actual effects of some fixtures after installation.
