Tomato growers Tomato Masters and Plessey in Flemish, Belgium, will complete the installation of 100% Hyperion ceiling lights this year, when the total level of fill light on the tomato farm will exceed 200 umol/m2/s.

It is reported that the two companies reached a cooperative relationship in 2018, and Tomato Masters plans to install Plessey's LED lighting fixtures for its 5.4-hectare new greenhouse. This is one of the world's largest greenhouses for installing 100% LED devices for tomatoes, and how the crops react is interesting.

Plessey said that LED is a cold light source that produces less radiant heat and has less effect on the temperature of the cultivation environment.

To reduce the heat generated by the lighting, Tomato Masters installed a high-level heat pipe to compensate for the temperature difference, but the pipe is still not needed, prompting the company's planting leader Tom Vlaemynck to consider reducing the heat pipe.

Malessen Klein, Plessey's chief agronomist, said that using 200 umo/m2/sl LED lighting, Tomato Master can provide an artificial light source equivalent to 1200 joules per day, excluding ambient light levels. Thanks to the high lighting performance of LED luminaires, Tomato Master can illuminate fully grown crops at moderate density in the middle of winter. As a result, growers are able to choose a planting time throughout the year, ensuring stable high yields every week, no matter what variety is cultivated.
