UDC will mass produce blue phosphorescent OLED next year

Recently, the display material company Universal Display Corporation (UDC) announced the opening of a new OLED manufacturing base for the manufacture of phosphorescent organic light-emitting materials (PHOLED), which is expected to be mass-produced in 2024. It is reported that the luminous efficiency of PHOLED can be as high as 4 times that of traditional fluorescent OLED. The advantage is that it can improve battery life, product performance, brightness and display effect.

UDC will mass produce blue phosphorescent OLED next year

It is understood that common OLED display schemes use red and green as phosphorescent elements, while blue is used as fluorescent elements. The efficiency of phosphorescence converting electrical energy into light is close to 100%, while fluorescence is only 25%. At the same time, improving blue display has always been a problem faced by the industry. With the commercialization of PHOLED technology, this problem is expected to be well resolved.

UDC's blue phosphorescent material process reached initial specifications last year, and mass production is expected to begin next year, depending on the customer. LG and Samsung are also optimistic about blue PHOLED technology, and have cooperated with UDC to use PHOLED to develop next-generation OLED display solutions. It is said that LG and Samsung may use this display solution for TVs, smartphones and other devices between 2024 and 2026.
