US DOE released the "2022 SSL Solid State Lighting Product Manufacturing Status and Opportunities" analysis report

On February 2, 2022, the US DOE released the "2022 SSL Solid State Lighting Product Manufacturing Status and Opportunities" analysis report, which in-depth discusses the LED R&D and manufacturing technology innovation opportunities, which will be conducive to the improvement of solid-state lighting (SSL) energy saving, and at the same time. It will also support a greater role for American-made lighting products in the global market. The rapid development of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and SSL-based lighting products and systems presents an opportunity to rethink the way manufacturing is done and to embed sustainable manufacturing processes and materials into the manufacturing supply chain, as detailed below:

US DOE released the "2022 SSL Solid State Lighting Product Manufacturing Status and Opportunities" analysis report

Potential for improvement in production technology across the supply chain;

Increase U.S. manufacturing and enhance U.S. competitiveness in the global lighting market;

Improve sustainable manufacturing processes and materials;

Manufacture new form factors to improve light efficiency.

Current status of SSL manufacturing R&D technology innovation:

1. LED chip & package manufacturing:

LED wafer wavelength uniformity, LED wafer manufacturing automation, LED device testing productivity;

Micro LED measurement innovation, micro LED high-quality technology, chip-level optoelectronic integration.

2. Manufacturing of LED lamps:

Universal voltage drive, lighting assembly automation;

Additive manufacturing of lamps (3D printing), lighting sustainable material supply chain.

3. OLED chip manufacturing

Customizable OLED substrate fabrication, rapid deposition of organic materials;

Mature OLED packaging technology.

Current global SSL product sales status:

From 2019 to 2024, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of unit sales of LED lamps is about 10%, and the revenue is expected to be 13%. All other lighting technologies are expected to face steady declines between 2019 and 2024, with fluorescent and incandescent lamps seeing the fastest declines at -22% and -15%, respectively.
