Xuchang, Henan Launches Urban Lighting Enhancement Campaign
Urban lighting improvement serves as an important approach to upgrading the city image, improving urban functions, and enhancing the living environment. Recently, the Action Plan for the In-Depth Implementation of Key Urban Renewal Projects in Xuchang City was issued, and launching the urban lighting enhancement campaign is one of the key initiatives. According to the plan, Xuchang will further upgrade basic lighting facilities, including the renovation and improvement of lighting on 20 roads, festive lighting on 5 roads, lighting in 10 parks and squares, and lighting along the pedestrian paths and bridges on 2 rivers.

The campaign is led by the Xuchang Urban Administration Bureau and implemented by Xuchang City Urban Construction Investment Development Group Co., Ltd., and is being carried out in four bid sections simultaneously. At present, all bid sections are progressing smoothly, and some road sections have completed lighting upgrades, bringing greater convenience and warmth to residents’ daily lives with a new nighttime appearance.
Streetlights are the guardians of the city at night. A total of 207 sets of double-arm streetlight heads were replaced on Liancheng Avenue, 130 sets on Chenzhuang Street, 116 sets on Xinxing Road (Baihua Road - Xuzhou Road section), and 339 sets on Yan’an Road (Xuyou Road - North Outer Ring section). Eighty-one sets of Chinese-style lamps were replaced on Weiwen Road and 11 sets on Jian’an Avenue. Fourteen sets of single-arm streetlights were newly installed on Qingyuan Street and Wenxuan Road respectively, and 190 sets of single-arm streetlight heads were replaced on Xinxing Road (Yuxiu Road - Baling Road section). With these new streetlights put into use, stable, even and wide-ranging lighting has outlined the city’s nighttime silhouette and brought a greater sense of safety and warmth to night-shift workers and strolling residents. Meanwhile, cable laying and lamp installation are proceeding as scheduled on other roads included in the upgrade, which will resolve the problems of insufficient and non-functional lighting in the downtown area.
As the Spring Festival approaches, the installation of festive lighting is being carried out intensively. So far, the cable trench and restoration works on Jianshe Road (Laodong Road - Wenfeng Road section) have been fully completed, with pipe jacking and hand-hole construction reaching 98% completion. The installation of tree lamps on Liancheng Avenue (Wenfeng Road - Jian’an Avenue section) has reached 81%, and cable trench and pipe jacking works are basically finished.
Construction of cable trenches, pipe jacking and hand holes on Bayi Road (Laodong Road - Xuzhou Road section) and Jian’an Avenue (Wenfeng Road - Weiwu Avenue section) is nearing completion, and tree lamp installation has begun. Foundation construction of distribution boxes and cable laying are underway on some road sections, preparing for a strong festive atmosphere.
Lighting upgrades for parks, squares, pedestrian paths and bridges are also key parts of the campaign. At present, the civil works along the Qingyi River and Yinma River pedestrian paths are basically completed, and path lamp installation is in full swing. Among them, 800 meters of wiring has been finished for Qingyi River Park paths, accounting for 60% of the total task. Civil works have been completed at Technology Square, Yuemin Park and Chunqiu Square, while remaining works are speeding up at Xudu Park and Dihao Park. Construction has started at Luming Lake Sports Park and Xuchang East Station Square.
Lamp removal on all 23 bridges has been finished. Characteristic lamps such as lotus-leaf lamps and ginkgo lamps have been confirmed and put into production. Point light source installation on Tianbao Bridge has reached 20%, and wall-washing lamps and floodlights are being steadily installed on Jian’an Bridge, Sanli Bridge and other bridges, with some bridges reaching 80% completion. Upon completion, these projects will create an aesthetic and practical lighting environment for residents’ nighttime leisure and walking.
Good lighting also requires good maintenance. To ensure streetlights operate efficiently, a unified “central nervous system - brain” is essential, and the remote centralized lighting control platform acts as this brain. At the control terminal, all hardware including box-type transformers and single-lamp controllers have been delivered, and software development has reached 80%. Field surveys and equipment commissioning will follow to build an efficient and intelligent lighting management system, realizing precise and intelligent management of urban lighting.
