Street Lights Upgraded in Luliang County of Yunnan's Qujing

The recent street light renovation project in Luliang County of Qujing, Yunnan province, has been completed. As the traditional high-pressure sodium lamps are being “retired” and new smart energy-saving LED lights are put into service, the city’s nightscape has become more vibrant and the benefits to the people more tangible.

Since August of this year, 2,196 street lights on 29 roads and at major traffic nodes in the old urban area of Luliang County have been equipped with smart features, while another 668 lights on 10 streets in the new urban area have been repaired. As a result, the city's night view has taken on a brand-new look.

The upgrade has replaced the previously used high-energy-consumption high-pressure sodium lamps with energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly LED lights. Supporting power sources have been renewed, aging lines replaced, and ground fault protection devices added to eliminate potential safety hazards. In addition, a smart lighting control platform has been established to enable “remote management” of each street light.

"Now we can check the real-time lighting status, voltage, and current of each street light on our phones, and adjust the brightness flexibly. For instance, we can lower the power of street lights to half or one-third of normal levels after midnight. The system sends an immediate alert when a street light fails, which helps us address the issue promptly," said Xu Guangliang, head of the technology department of Yunnan Dipai Industrial and Trade Co., Ltd.

It is reported that some street lights in the built-up area of Luliang County were first installed in 2004. Problems such as insufficient illumination, high energy consumption, and aging equipment have become common. This upgrade has turned the people’s pressing concerns into new highlights of urban development, making night travel safer for citizens. "The street lights are now much brighter, which makes going out at night safer and driving easier because obstacles and pedestrians on the road are clearly visible," said Zhang Zongliang, a local resident. "The streets are all brightly lit, making our post-dinner strolls even more enjoyable."

The project has also added efficient lighting facilities at major traffic nodes and key security areas, further strengthening the city's nighttime safety network. "After the upgrade, the quality and uniformity of nighttime lighting in the urban area have improved significantly, greatly enhancing citizens' travel experience at night," said Lu Yongjun, director of the county's municipal public utility management center. "The new lights are energy-efficient and eco-friendly, reducing energy consumption by over 20% compared to before. The response time for repair and maintenance has also been shortened from 8 hours to less than 2 hours."
