Taiyuan Wusu International Airport Phase III Runway 2 Navigation Lighting System Successfully Activated
On June 5, the newly constructed Runway 2 of the Phase III expansion project at Taiyuan Wusu International Airport was successfully illuminated. This milestone marks significant progress toward the official operational launch of the runway.

As a key project under the Civil Aviation Administration of China's "14th Five-Year Plan," the newly built Runway 2 spans 3,600 meters in length and 45 meters in width, positioned 490 meters from the existing runway. Designed as a 4E-class flight area, the project includes parallel taxiways, a southern apron, and supporting facilities. The primary landing end is equipped with a Category III precision approach system, while the secondary landing end features a Category I system. Once operational, the runway will significantly enhance the airport's operational capacity.
The navigation lighting system, often referred to as the "third eye" for pilots, is a critical facility ensuring flight safety during nighttime and low-visibility conditions. The lighting project for the new Runway 2 commenced on April 1, 2024. After 14 months of intensive construction, the precision approach lighting, runway lighting, taxiway lighting systems, and two lighting stations were fully completed.
During construction, Shanxi Aviation Industry Group Co., Ltd. and the contractor, Beijing Jinghangan Airport Engineering Co., Ltd., advanced innovative construction techniques. They introduced new processes such as integrated light boxes, upgraded isolation transformer connectors, and innovative embedded lighting installation tools. Additionally, improvements in the manufacturing of primary cable heads for lighting systems significantly enhanced circuit insulation performance, ensuring long-term system stability.
Moving forward, Shanxi Aviation Industry Group Co., Ltd. will collaborate with all stakeholders and strengthen coordination with civil aviation authorities to advance calibration, test flights, and acceptance procedures. These efforts will ensure the smooth commissioning of the new runway, supporting Taiyuan's development as a modern regional aviation hub and elevating Shanxi's civil aviation industry to new heights of high-quality development.
