Smart Eco-Friendly Streetlights Deployed in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s Capital
Smart, eco-friendly streetlights-capable of generating electricity, providing Wi-Fi access, and generating revenue for the city-have been put into operation in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

This project was implemented without utilizing the municipal budget; the streetlights were installed and deployed at the sole expense of Project Vision AI. This arrangement allows the city to evaluate the technology's practical effectiveness in a real-world setting. Should the pilot project yield positive results, the technology is expected to be rolled out across other regions of Kyrgyzstan.
One of the project's core values ??lies in its ability to modernize urban infrastructure without requiring massive investments in the energy grid. These smart streetlights generate their own electricity, thereby reducing the load on the power grid and enhancing infrastructure resilience. Such streetlights contribute to energy conservation and facilitate more efficient resource utilization.
Each streetlight offers up to 20 distinct functions, ranging from lighting and Wi-Fi connectivity to digital displays for broadcasting news and traffic updates, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and smart sensors. Consequently, a single streetlight can fulfill the functions of multiple separate components within the urban infrastructure.
The project places a particular emphasis on safety and security. Built-in AI cameras and sensors enable immediate responses to anomalies; they can detect the sounds of collisions or sudden shifts in crowd behavior, rapidly relaying this information to emergency services. This mechanism significantly accelerates response times during critical situations.
In the realm of transportation, smart sensors analyze road conditions in real time, helping drivers locate available parking spaces more quickly and assisting in the management and synchronization of traffic signals. It is estimated that this functionality could reduce urban traffic congestion by up to 30%.
According to the developers, these streetlights can also serve as hosting platforms for telecommunications equipment and as foundational infrastructure for 5G network deployment. This capability not only provides practical utility but also generates revenue for the municipal budget.
The project's environmental significance is equally noteworthy: by incorporating renewable energy sources, the strain on the power grid is alleviated, and carbon dioxide emissions are correspondingly reduced, thereby contributing to a cleaner urban environment. Neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have all expressed keen interest in this technology; however, the pilot project was launched first in Kyrgyzstan, endowing it with unique demonstrative significance-not only domestically but across the entire Eurasian region. Should this project prove successful, it is expected to attract both tourists and investors, while also accelerating the digitalization of the capital city. If the results are favorable, the project team plans to expand the smart streetlamp network along Bishkek’s main thoroughfares and subsequently extend its implementation nationwide.
To date, Bishkek has completed the deployment of eight smart streetlamps, thereby demonstrating to the public that streetlights can serve as far more than mere sources of illumination; rather, they can constitute a vital component of a new type of urban infrastructure-one oriented toward convenience, safety, and sustainable development.
