Streetlights Lit on the First Demonstration Section of ECD Highway Phase II DB Project in Guyana

Recently, the streetlights of the first demonstration section of the ECD Highway Phase II DB Project undertaken by China Railway First Group have finished commissioning and been successfully switched on, enabling full-range nighttime illumination. As rows of streetlights stretch along the highway, nighttime travel conditions have been markedly improved, delivering stronger guarantees for local residents’ mobility and road traffic safety.

As night falls, neatly arranged streetlights light up along the highway, forming a bright luminous belt running through the town. They illuminate the wide and smooth pavement as well as the way home for residents nearby. A local resident living alongside the highway commented: “We had to carry flashlights whenever we went out at night. Now with the streetlights on, the elderly can stroll and children can travel after dark with greater peace of mind.” Passing drivers also mentioned that the streetlights offer clearer visibility for nighttime driving and boost travel safety.

Records show that the ECD (East Coast Demerara) Highway Phase II Project is situated in Region 4 of Guyana. Serving as a major transport artery connecting the capital Georgetown and the eastern Mahaica area, the highway starts at Sheriff Street in Georgetown and terminates at Mahaica, with a total length of approximately 40 kilometers. The project involves upgrading existing roads and constructing new sections. The commenced pioneering section spans around 5 kilometers from Belfield to Orange Nassau.

The highway corridor features heavy traffic and densely populated residential neighborhoods. Previously, inadequate nighttime lighting on certain sections meant vehicles relied solely on headlights, creating inconveniences for pedestrians. With the illumination of this first demonstration section, road surfaces, traffic markings and surrounding environments become more visible. This helps mitigate nighttime traffic risks, improves road service functions, and enables residents to truly benefit from upgraded infrastructure.

Throughout construction, the project team prioritized improving local livelihoods and ensuring safe travel for residents. In response to the high humidity and heavy salt spray typical of Guyana’s coastal areas, the team formulated special construction plans covering critical links including waterproofing and anti-corrosion treatment of equipment, circuit earthing protection and illumination verification. To minimize traffic disruptions and construction nuisances, segmented daytime construction and point-by-point nighttime commissioning were adopted. Works including lamp foundation construction, cable laying, luminaire installation and earth resistance testing were coordinated to secure safe and stable operation of lighting facilities.

The successful one-off lighting test on the first demonstration section accumulates experience for subsequent streetlight installation and commissioning, and provides a replicable construction model for advancing the overall project. Going forward, the project team will continue constructing lighting facilities on remaining sections, refine routine maintenance protocols, steadily enhance road capacity and safety, and ensure project achievements bring greater benefits to residents along the route.
