ASABE Publishes New Standard for Horticultural Lighting

According to reports, recently, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) released the second standard in a three-part series of standards, LED light radiation measurement of plant growth and development.

ASABE Publishes New Standard for Horticultural Lighting

ANSI/ASABE S642, Recommended Methods of Measurement and Testing of LED Products Used in Plant Growth and Development. Specifically describes how to measure and test LED packages, arrays, modules, LED lamps and other LED light radiating components.

Prior to this, ASABE published the first standard of the series, ANSI/ASABE S640, mainly about the number and units of electromagnetic radiation of plants (photosynthetic organisms), defining and describing the measurement standards for plant growth and development. Since plants use very different light than humans, they need different units from the familiar lumens and candela meters.

In addition, a third standard will focus on performance criteria for horticultural lighting LED systems.

It is understood that ASABE was established in 1907 to support engineers to advance the development of agricultural, biological and food systems. The ASABE Agricultural Lighting Committee began developing a standardized measurement standard for horticultural lighting in 2015.
