Installation of Additional Lighting Facilities on Yangjiang-Maoming Expressway in Guangdong

Recently, the project of installing extra lighting facilities on Yangjiang-Maoming Expressway, Yangjiang-Hailing Island Expressway and Hailing Island Bridge has been fully completed and put into operation. Serving as a vital transportation artery connecting western Guangdong with Guangxi and Hainan, as well as a key thoroughfare leading to the 5A-level Hailing Island Scenic Area, the road is now lined with warm light strips that boost drivers’ safety and comfort during night trips.

With the continuous improvement of the highway network and growing traffic volume, enhancing night driving conditions and safeguarding road safety have become top concerns of motorists. Centered on optimizing travel experience, the road authority carried out thorough planning and implemented rigorous whole-process control covering scheme design and on-site construction to accelerate the delivery of the lighting upgrade project.

The lighting installation work covers tunnel approach roads, service areas and interchange ramps along the routes, confronting multiple constraints including tight construction schedules, heavy traffic maintenance pressure and intricate underground pipelines. The project team collaborated with constructors to deploy extra manpower and machinery for parallel multi-site construction. To speed up progress without disrupting traffic, they maintained close coordination with traffic police, highway administration and monitoring centers to rationally schedule construction hours and work zones and ensure smooth passage of vehicles.

Energy-saving LED light sources and intelligent dimming devices were adopted across the entire construction stretch. Lamp pole spacing and installation angles were adjusted in accordance with ramp layouts, delivering uniform road illumination to eliminate blind spots while preventing glare that impairs driving vision.

Following two months of non-stop construction, the supplementary lighting system is fully operational. A total of 292 street lamps and 20 lighting control cabinets have been newly installed to form a stable intelligent lighting system, covering all tunnel approaches (2 locations), service areas (3 locations) and interchange ramps (14 locations). The night driving environment along the routes has been greatly upgraded.

Feedback from traffic police shows that after the project went live, night traffic efficiency has markedly improved, with risky driving behaviors caused by poor visibility such as sudden braking, misjudging exits and random lane changes dropping significantly.

Bright street lamps illuminate the journey, delivering clear sightlines and safer travels. Going forward, Guangdong Communications Authority will continue to respond to motorists’ travel demands, upgrade road maintenance and service standards, optimize driving environments, and guarantee safe trips for all road users.
