Xuchang, Henan Optimizes Urban Lighting Control for Smarter Street Lighting
To further upgrade the quality of urban nighttime lighting and advance green and low-carbon development concepts, reporters learned from the Urban Lighting Center under Xuchang Urban Administration Bureau of Henan Province on April 14 that the center has carried out refined optimization of lighting modes via a remote centralized lighting control platform. The adjustment targets the newly renovated decorative street lamps along Weiwen Road, Weiwu Avenue and Qianjin Road in the urban area, taking public feedback into full consideration.

Xuchang recently completed renovation and upgrading of decorative street lamps on the three thoroughfares above. The vastly improved road lighting has won wide recognition among local residents. To further elevate the operation and management of urban lighting and avoid power waste during off-peak nighttime hours, the Urban Lighting Center solicited public opinions and analyzed pedestrian and vehicle traffic patterns at different nighttime hours. Leveraging the intelligent management capabilities of the remote centralized control platform, the center abandoned the traditional full-brightness lighting model and adopted time-phased, graded precise dimming for decorative street lamps.
"After scientific calculation and commissioning, while guaranteeing sufficient road illumination to meet residents’ travel needs and basic urban public security requirements, we adjusted the original 100% full-brightness operation mode. The lamps now run at 70% brightness before midnight and dim down to 50% after midnight," a person in charge of the Urban Lighting Center explained. Such intelligent, refined dimming measures minimize unnecessary energy consumption and strike a balanced harmony between reliable lighting service and energy conservation.
Statistics show remarkable results from the optimized lighting scheme. Before adjustment, the daily power consumption of decorative street lamps on the three roads stood at approximately 5,631.4 kWh. After the intelligent dimming upgrade, daily power use dropped to 3,519.27 kWh, cutting daily electricity consumption by 2,112.13 kWh. The move greatly slashes operational power costs for urban lighting and provides strong impetus for the city’s green, low-carbon development.
Urban lighting bears close relevance to people’s well-being, while energy conservation embodies the city’s social responsibility. This time-phased dimming reform breaks the rigid "one-size-fits-all" traditional urban lighting management. Powered by intelligent technology, it realizes demand-based, scientific light regulation. The initiative safeguards brightness and safety across the city after dark and puts into practice green, eco-friendly and low-carbon development ideas, delivering warmer, more efficient urban governance.
